photoPLAN THE DAY THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU
So you’re going to be in Terre Haute for a while and need ideas on what to do? Great! Here are ideas for your few-hours or few-days stay.

Make a pilgrimage for Saint Mother Theodore Guerin

In October 2006, Pope Benedict XVI canonized the late Mother Theodore Guerin as a saint. She is only the eighth person from the United States to be granted sainthood. As a member of the Sisters of Providence, she founded Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College just across the Wabash River from downtown Terre Haute. There are many ways to enjoy the day at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. For more information, visit the Sisters of Providence online home.

  • Tour the grounds where Saint Mother Theodore Guerin lived and worked.
  • See alpacas in the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, a ministry of the Sisters of Providence.
  • Visit the Saint Mother Theodore shrine in the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
  • Pause for quiet meditation in one of the peaceful spots on the campus grounds.
  • Take back a handmade item from the Sisters of Providence gift shop.
Travel the Historic National Road

U.S. Highway 40, which runs straight through Terre Haute as Wabash Avenue, is now the Historic National Road.

  • Begin downtown with your choice of museum, either the Swope Art Museum on Seventh Street or the Children’s Museum near 5th Street.
  • Stop a couple blocks away at Ninth and Wabash for the Clabber Girl Museum and Bake Shop. Enjoy the free-admission museum, which includes both baking and racing memorabilia.
  • Go about three miles east on Wabash and take a right at Fruitridge Avenue for some fun at the historic Deming Park.
  • Go back to the Historic National Road and go less than two miles east to visit Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to see The Flame of the Millennium, a beautiful sculpture, as well as the football field that’s home to the Indianapolis Colts during training camp.
  • As you leave town, take note of Indiana’s oldest billboard near Hunt Road. It has a working clock and lets you know you’re just five minutes from the home of Clabber Girl Baking Powder.
Open your eyes to the Downtown Art Tour

If you love the visual arts, you’re in for a treat in downtown Terre Haute. Depending on how long you like to browse, you can make it a half-day, full-day or even two-day tour.

  • Park in the downtown parking garage and walk half a block to the Swope Art Museum at 25 S. Seventh Street. Enjoy the permanent collections of great American painters and sculptors like Edward Hopper and T.C. Steele. The three-story gallery also holds traveling collections. Check www.swope.org for a current listing.
  • If you’re ready for a short break, walk to Coffee Grounds at 423 Wabash Avenue. Enjoy a cup of joe and take in the artwork hanging on the exposed brick walls.
  • Now you’re ready to do a little shopping in the gallery of Arts Illiana, just off Wabash Avenue on N. Sixth Street. See what’s in store at www.artsilliana.org.
  • Walk a couple blocks further north to Indiana State University and visit the University Art Gallery at Seventh and Chestnut. See the impressive collection of professional, student and faculty artwork in all forms of media. Find out what’s on display now at www.indstate.edu/artgallery.
