PREMIER VENUES & LOCAL AMENITIES

The Wabash Valley is a region rich in sports and outdoor recreation. With nationally recognized assets including the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course and Griffin Bike Park, and quality associations such as the Terre Haute Quarter Midget Association, Terre Haute is the metropolitan hub that brings many visitors to the region for sports and recreation. Explore further throughout the Wabash Valley, and you'll find Springhill Soccer Complex, Strive 365, and the Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area, just to name a few. Below is a list of Terre Haute and Vigo County's premier venues and local amenities.

LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course

This wonderful 240-acre course, located east of Terre Haute at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, has the distinction of being one of the few purpose-built cross country courses in the world, as well as one of the most spectator-friendly distance running courses. Due to the unique design of the course and the facility, a runner may encounter various types of grades, slopes and terrain, and a spectator can view the entire course by being positioned on the inside of the grid and at the top of the hill.  (The irrigated course has a press box, spectator seating, ample parking, restrooms, and concessions- known for holding NCAA Championships, IHSAA State Finals, Nike Cross Regionals and many invitational races).

Vigo County Youth Soccer Association

One of the largest complexes in the Midwest dedicated solely to soccer; VCYSA’s facility covers 50+ acres with 23 fields ranging in size from a full-sided field to a U4 field. The complex is designed so the fields can be rotated on a semi-annual basis to help to deter physical wear. VCYSA has 80-plus recreational and 20-plus travel teams for youth ranging in ages from 4 to 19 and also hosts the Midwest Soccer Classic. (The Complex has concessions, parking and restrooms for spectators.)

Sports and Recreation Center at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

This state-of-the-art recreational and competitive sports venue houses multiple basketball courts surrounded by a full track and an outer layer of weight-lifting stations and racquetball courts. Also included within this breathtaking structure is a 25-yard, eight-lane swimming and diving pool and a multi-use room for dancing and wrestling. In addition, the SRC houses Hulbert Arena with its unique Boston Celtics-style parquet floor, home to Rose-Hulman’s basketball and volleyball programs. This 1,700-seat facility hosted the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Final Four in 2002 and 2003. (The recreation Center has concessions, parking and restrooms for spectators and ample seating.  The facility is an active oasis where you can burn off some energy rock climbing, swimming, shooting hoops, lifting weights using the treadmill or playing racquetball.  The campus also provides a full football field and track as well as a baseball field). 

Griffin Bike Park

Griffin Bike Park is a project of the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department.  The design and development of the Griffin Bike Park is guided by these core values, Freedom, Family, Friendship and Community.  The 300-acre Griffin Bike Park was designed by Hilride Progression Development Group, LLC to provide riders from all backgrounds, ages, skills and abilities with a wide range of exciting riding opportunities. These include exploring the trails and the unique landscape and ecosystems found within the park, to expanding and progressing riding skills by tackling a wide range of technical trail and enhanced terrain features. The park is designed to become a hub for the community and directly engage and inspire local youth, young adults and families in a sport that promotes healthy, active, outdoor lifestyles and provides exciting, challenging and rewarding experiences. 

Hulman Center at Indiana State University

Hulman Center, a 10,200-seat multipurpose arena in downtown Terre Haute, has been home of many exciting NCAA and IHSAA athletic contests in its nearly 40-year history.  In addition it has been the venue for numerous concerts, trade shows and conventions.  It is the home court of the Indiana State University men’s and women’s basketball teams.  Indiana State recognizes its obligation to the community at large, and within established policies and procedures makes the facility available to the public for the general benefit and enjoyment of all.  (The Hulman Center has a press box, spectator seating, parking, restrooms and concessions.)

Hulman Links Golf Course of Terre Haute

Hulman Links is a 18 hole course featuring 7225 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par 72.  The course rating is 74.9 and it has a slope rating of 144.  Hulman Links has been recognized numerous times, most recently being named the 2009 Indiana Municipal Golf Course of the Year.  Also, in 2006, Hulman Links was voted the 6th toughest public golf course in Indiana.

Indiana State University's Bob Warn Field

Bob Warren Field is home base for the Sycamores, one of the Midwest’s finest Division I collegiate baseball programs. This past summer, the field was the site of the American Legion Baseball Midwest Regionals, and this year it hosted the Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Tournament. It’s also home to the Terre Haute Rex collegiate summer baseball team, a member of the Prospect League. (Bob Warn Field has a lighted field, turf, scoreboard, spectator seating, press box, parking, restrooms, and concessions).

Gibson Track

Included at the facility is a state-of-the-art 400-meter track, as well as accommodations for multi-directional options for all NCAA field events. A Daktronics video board also adorns the northwest corner of the facility with the option for multiple video boards elsewhere throughout the facility for larger meets. Located on the banks of the Wabash River at the intersection of First and Chestnut Streets is the Gibson Track & Field Complex, a superb, newly-built 2015 $4.3 million track facility to shore of the western edge of Indiana State's campus.  The Gibson Track & Field Complex is named for longtime Indiana State supporters Max and Jackie Gibson and their family, whose gift enabled initial construction of the facility. The Gibson’s were also instrumental in the development of the nationally renowned LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, which has hosted the NCAA Championships a total of 12 times since 2002. 

Terre Haute North Little League

The Terre Haute North Little League as a North and South Diamond it offers Tee Ball, Coach Pitch, Rookie League, Minor League, Major League.  (The TH North Little League has lighted field, turf, scoreboard, spectator seating, concessions, press box, parking and restroom facilities).

Riley Ball Field

This ball field has 6 different fields that offer Tee Ball, Coach Pitch, Rookie League, Minor League, Major League, Babe Ruth, and Softball.  (The Riley Field has lighted fields, scoreboard, spectator seating, concessions, press box, parking and restroom facilities).

Terre Haute Quarter Midget Association

The Terre Haute Quarter Midget Association (THQMA) is based at the Hulman Mini-Speedway at 13th & Lockport in Terre Haute where local events are held. But, THQMA is a member of Quarter Midgets of America (QMA) which is a national non-profit organization with over 2,500 family memberships and 4,000 drivers. There are 50+ Quarter Midget Clubs nationwide divided into 13 regions. Therefore, drivers can participate in both Regional and National events. QMA is a family oriented sport that involves racing in special prepared cars. The cars, rules and safety procedures are designed specifically for kids. They race on oval tracks approximately 1/20 of a mile. A child who is 5 to 16 years of age can race. Safety features include full roll cages, multi-point seat harnesses, full face helmets, and other gear. (The THQMA is lighted, has spectator seating, press box, parking, restrooms and concessions.) *Currently building at a new location site.

Terre Haute Aquatic Center

The VCSC Aquatic Center is a brand new state-of-the-art facility featuring a 10-lane, 50-meter competition pool with 2 moveable bulkheads to allow for separate competition and warm-up/warm-down pools.  Their Colorado Timing System features a full-color LED matrix scoreboard capable of showing full meet data and approved advertising.  The facility also includes spacious locker rooms, offices, a large classroom, and a concession stand-all designed to handle the needs of a large event.

Jeanne Knoerle Sports Complex at SMWC

The Knoerle Center boasts a collegiate regulation-sized gym, a practice gym for auxiliary revenue and intramural sports, a 3,600 square foot lobby, locker rooms, a training room, a fitness room, offices and ample storage space with the entire facility totaling over 45,000 square foot. It is located at the west edge of campus, behind the Mary and Andy Rooney Library. Additionally, the facility is verified with a Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) environmental certification through the U.S. Green Building Council.

Wabash Valley Fairgrounds - Action Track

The Action Track is a half mile dirt track located at the Vigo County, Indiana fairgrounds on U.S. Route 41 along the south side of Terre Haute, Indiana. The track hosts annual United States Automobile Club (USAC) midget car, sprint car and Silver Crown events. Notable drivers that have competed at the track include A. J. Foyt, Jeff Gordon, Parnelli Jones, and Tony Stewart. The track has held events sanctioned by USAC, its predecessor American Automobile Association (AAA), and the World of Outlaws. (The Action Track is lighted, has spectator seating, press box, parking, restrooms and concessions.)

Sporting Clays of Terre Haute

Terre Haute Sporting Clays provides: Five Stand, Trap, Rifle Range (100 yard and 150 yard), and a pistol range with standard 8 and 25 yards.  There are now 2 courses “Meadows” and “Skeet in the Woods”.   Sporting Clays provides the following Services:  Golf Carts, Lessons for all shooting disciplines, Shotgun Rental, Guns for Sale, Ammunition and Reloading supplies for members and the general public/programs to individuals, non-profit organizations and corporations in the Terre Haute area.  They have an onsite small Restaurant (Food service -Catering available). They have ample parking, restrooms.

The Country Club of Terre Haute

The Country Club of Terre Haute offers an 18-hole, par 71 golf course, designed by William Diddel, a founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. The natural setting, in conjunction with the contours of the land, enables the golfer to enjoy a course that is fair yet challenging.

The Landing at Fort Harrison

Open year round, seven days a week, the Landing offers a well-manicured 18-hole, par-4 course with 6,300 yards of play, as well as a pro shop and lounge. Summer hours are 8am to 7pm, and winter hours are 10am to 3pm.

Mark's Par Three Golf Course

Eighteen holes (13 par 3s and five par 4s), executive-type course concesiions, clubhouse, and riding carts. Located at 2401 N. Chamberlain Road, US 40, a half-mile north of East Glenn.

Rea Park Golf Course

Rea Park, located at 3500 South 7th in Terre Haute, is a 18 hole course featuring 6482 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72.  The course rating is 69.8 and it has a slope rating of 113.  Rea Park opened for play in 1920.  This course is a fun but challenging golf experience for all.
