Start: 7th & Wabash Avenue – Crossroads of America Historic Marker
Begin at the iconic Crossroads of America historic marker, symbolizing Terre Haute’s pivotal role in transportation history. This intersection marks the perfect starting point for your downtown adventure.
Stop 1: Federal Building (Scott College of Business)
Walk east to the former Federal Building, now home to Indiana State University’s Scott College of Business. Inside, you’ll find preserved post office boxes and elegant architectural details that blend the building’s historic charm with its modern educational use.
Stop 2: Larry Bird Statue
Head south to snap a selfie with the Larry Bird statue, honoring Terre Haute’s basketball legend. This is a must-see for sports fans and a tribute to Bird’s enduring legacy in Indiana.

Stop 3: Hulman & Company Building
Continue to the historic Hulman & Company building, now called The Hub, an important site in Terre Haute’s industrial history. The building houses a fascinating collection of artifacts from the Hulman era, including memorabilia from Clabber Girl Baking Powder, still produced here today. While you’re there stop for lunch or a drink—the old industry building offers an inviting and unique atmosphere and a nod to the city’s history.
Stop 4: Vigo County History Center & Coca-Cola Bottle Mural
Walk down to the Vigo County History Center, which showcases three floors of exhibits detailing the city’s rich past, from early industries to cultural milestones. Don’t miss the newly restored Coca-Cola bottle mural outside, commemorating Terre Haute as the birthplace of the world-famous bottle design. On your way out, treat yourself to a Square Donut, a local favorite first created here in the 1960s.

Stop 5: St. Benedict’s Church & Ohio Street Landmarks
Head over to St. Benedict’s Church, a Romanesque beauty with stunning stained-glass windows and intricate architectural details. Continue walking along Ohio Street, where you’ll pass more historic landmarks:

- Ohio Building: Built in 1912, this structure boasts early 20th-century architecture.
- Indiana Theater: A beautifully restored 1920s movie palace, the theater stands as a nostalgic tribute to Terre Haute’s entertainment history.
- Tribune Building (now Candlewood Suites & Terre Haute Children’s Museum): Once home to the local newspaper, this historic building has been creatively transformed into a hotel and a museum.
- Look for hidden murals as you walk, each reflecting Terre Haute’s unique artistic spirit and cultural pride.
Stop 6: Swope Art Museum
Turn onto 7th Street to visit the Swope Art Museum, which houses an impressive collection of American art, including works by renowned regional artists. The museum’s elegant architecture and rich exhibits make it a highlight of the tour.
End: 7th & Wabash Avenue – Food, Drink, and Fun
Wrap up your walk back at 7th and Wabash, where you can enjoy a well-earned meal and drink. Choose from several great options including a coffee at Federal Coffee, pizza at Scout's Pizzeria, or a cold brew at a pub in a historic setting – The Copper Bar or the Terminal Pub.
