Historic Downtown West District

Self-Guided Walking Tour

Experience the best of Terre Haute’s west downtown district with this four-block walking tour that combines rich history, unique architecture, vibrant public art, local shops, and delicious dining. Starting at the Crossroads of America Historic Marker, this tour will take you on a journey through the city’s past and present.

Start: Crossroads of America Historic Marker (7th & Wabash)
Begin your tour at the Crossroads of America Historic Marker, a symbol of Terre Haute’s important role as a transportation hub during its early growth. This spot marks the intersection of two major U.S. highways, making it a fitting place to kick off your exploration. This intersection has also been featured along with Will Farrell in recent Pabst Blue Ribbon commercials.

Stop 1: Walk down 7th Street
Stroll south along 7th Street and watch for several hidden murals tucked into alleyways as you stop for a coffee at Federal Coffee. Pause to admire the stunning Old National Bank Building, a prime example of Neoclassical architecture.

Stop 2: Swope Art Museum
Continue south to the Swope Art Museum, where you’ll find an impressive collection of American art, including works by Edward Hopper and Grant Wood. Housed in a historic Art Deco building, the museum offers a beautiful blend of art and architecture. Cross Ohio Street and take in the view of St. Benedict’s Church to the east, a magnificent example of Romanesque Revival architecture. Nearby, you’ll spot the Hippodrome Theater, a remnant of Terre Haute’s bustling vaudeville entertainment scene in the early 1900s.

Stop 3: Indiana Theater
Walk west along Ohio Street to the Indiana Theater, one of downtown’s most iconic landmarks. Built in 1922, this Spanish Revival-style theater features intricate terra cotta detailing and is under renovation.

Stop 4: Local Shops – Haute Body Bar & Common Ground Yoga Studio
Explore the unique local shops nearby, including Haute Body Bar, offering a variety of wellness products, and Common Ground Yoga Studio, a serene space for relaxation and mindfulness. Stop by J. Ford Black Angus for a drink at the bar, housed in the former Heinl's Flower Shop building. Be sure to grab a selfie with the Stiffy Green mural, a nod to the famous tale of a loyal dog and the city’s folklore.

Stop 5: The Sycamore Building – Terre Haute’s Only Skyscraper
Cross Ohio Street and head north to see The Sycamore Building, Terre Haute’s only skyscraper. Built in 1921, this 12-story building remains a striking part of the city’s skyline. Walk further west along Walnut and note the architectural beauty of St. Joseph’s Church, with its Gothic Revival design.

End: Return to 7th & Wabash Avenue
Conclude your tour back at 7th and Wabash. Along the way, enjoy a variety of dining and pub options.
