Terre Haute Aerial

As I have been meeting with people across the city, region, and state, there is a palpable excitement surrounding Terre Haute and its potential for growth, particularly in the tourism sector. From ISU's recent basketball successes to the allure of being in the path of totality, Terre Haute has been a hotspot, drawing attention from across Indiana and beyond. As I step into my new role as the Executive Director of the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau (THCVB), I'm passionate about elevating Terre Haute as a distinctive destination, attracting new and returning visitors to our vibrant community – especially as the sun, moon, and stars are all aligned in the path of its total success!

Terre Haute’s Rising Tourism Trajectory

The numbers tell a compelling story. Terre Haute's hotel tax revenues for the first quarter of 2024 are already ahead of last year, signaling sustained growth in tourism. We closed last year, with Vigo County's tourism numbers up by an impressive 14.8% from 2022. Thousands of folks made their way to Terre Haute for the first weekend in April alone – which means 2024 is shaping up to eclipse last year’s record numbers!

Vigo County has carved its niche in Indiana's tourism scene, with Innkeeper's Tax revenue serving as a barometer for the region's hospitality sector. Our robust sports tourism is a significant draw anchored by three college sports teams and acclaimed venues like the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course and Griffin Bike Park. This year, Terre Haute is proud to host two national championships: the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships and the Quarter Midget Championships.

David Patterson, who retired in March, noted that Terre Haute pioneered sports tourism in Indiana—something that is now standard in most communities throughout the state. His 30 years of leadership laid a solid foundation, placing Terre Haute on a growth trajectory in tourism. From the Larry Bird era at ISU to the present, sports success has consistently brought life, energy, and visitors to our community.

Tourism's Economic Impact on Vigo County

The IEDC's 2022 report, released in February 2024, highlights tourism's positive ripple effect on Vigo County's economy. With visitor spending hitting $283 million in 2022, the tourism sector generated an economic impact of $166 million and supported 3,865 jobs. Tourism activities also contributed $31.3 million in revenues in 2022, with expectations soaring for 2024. Exciting events like the Terre Haute Air Show, Special Olympics Indiana 2024 Summer Games, and the opening of the Larry Bird Museum are set to draw huge crowds.

A Vision for Terre Haute's Future

I firmly believe that tourism is a catalyst for community growth and development, enriching its economy, culture, and overall well-being. Terre Haute's unique offerings and untapped potential position us as an unparalleled destination. I'm honored to build upon the strong foundation created by all those who have worked hard to get us where we are today.

So, what's next? 2024 is gearing up to be a blockbuster year for us. We're not just about getting folks to visit; we want them to fall in love with Terre Haute and return for more. The buzz is contagious, and I can’t wait to See You In Terre Haute!
