The Art of the Run
The Art of the Run is a celebratory public-art initiative featuring a dynamic series of large-scale fiberglass running-shoe sculptures, each uniquely painted by talented artists from across the Wabash Valley. Inspired by the spirit, speed, and storytelling of collegiate distance running, these vibrant sculptures will honor the athletes, the community, and the deep racing heritage of Terre Haute.
Unveiled in conjunction with the 2026 NCAA Division I Cross Country National Championships, the sculptures will welcome athletes and spectators as they arrive at the iconic LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course—a venue long recognized as one of the premier championship courses in the nation. Each sculpture serves as both an artistic landmark and a tribute to the dedication, endurance, and competitive spirit that define collegiate cross country.
Guided and supported by the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau, this project aims to highlight the creative talent of the region while enriching the visitor experience. The sculptures will be placed throughout the community, transforming Terre Haute into an open-air gallery that reflects its identity as a proud host city.
Through color, creativity, and community collaboration, The Art of the Run captures the energy of championship racing and the welcoming character of Terre Haute—inviting residents and guests alike to explore, celebrate, and share in this nationally significant event.
