A Championship Course
Designed for the Future
For nearly three decades, the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course has stood as one of the premier cross country venues in the United States—welcoming collegiate champions, elite runners, and thousands of spectators to Terre Haute. Now, a transformational $2.3 million investment is redefining the future of the facility as the community prepares to host the 2026 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships and the 2027 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
The master plan represents a long-term commitment to preserving and enhancing the championship experience while strengthening Terre Haute’s identity as “Cross Country Town USA.” Designed through a collaboration between architect Michael Waldbeiser, Keymark Development Inc., and Lowland Workshop, the improvements modernize the venue while honoring the legacy that has made LaVern Gibson nationally recognized in collegiate cross country.
Additional improvements completed in advance of the larger master plan included repairs to the existing facility, tuckpointing, sidewalk enhancements, upgraded water service infrastructure, and construction of a new operations barn to support event logistics and maintenance operations.
A Reimagined Arrival Experience
At the heart of the master plan is a redesigned campus entrance and circulation system that creates a more welcoming and efficient experience for athletes, coaches, spectators, and event partners. A new roundabout entrance and enhanced pedestrian connectivity improve traffic flow and wayfinding while establishing a stronger visual gateway into the course.
The centerpiece of the arrival experience will be Runners Circle, a signature gathering space featuring a six-foot-by-six-foot sculptural running shoe installation celebrating the spirit of cross country and Terre Haute’s deep connection to the sport. The landmark will serve as both a public art feature and a symbolic gateway into one of the nation’s most iconic running venues.
The installation is part of Art of the Run, a community-wide initiative featuring fiberglass running shoe sculptures designed by local artists throughout Terre Haute leading into the 2026 NCAA Championships.
Amenities for Championship Events
The master plan includes a new expanded restroom and concession facility designed to accommodate championship crowds ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 spectators. New sales tent areas, improved team check-in facilities, expanded parking accommodations, ADA accessibility enhancements, and modernized drop-off areas will support a smoother and more accessible race-day experience.
A new food truck court, event lawn, and gathering spaces will create additional opportunities for fan engagement and hospitality during major championship weekends while maintaining flexibility for local and regional meets throughout the year.
The plan also incorporates a large fire pit gathering area designed as a social hub for athletes, families, alumni, and spectators. Combined with enhanced viewing zones and improved spectator circulation, the venue will provide a more immersive and connected championship atmosphere.
Preserving a Premier Competition Surface
A major component of the investment includes an expansion of the irrigation across the course to ensure consistent championship-level turf conditions year-round. The irrigation improvements will strengthen course quality, resiliency, and long-term maintenance while supporting the expectations of NCAA championship competition.
